Two people planting trees in an urban area

How the £10,000 grant will help

This grant will support the rejuvenation of a local park, expand a campaign to develop the North towpath of the Grand Canal, and progress the development of local greening initiatives in and around local authority housing sites in Inchicore and Rialto. Local people living in Dublin 8 have identified the lack of green spaces including the low density of trees in the area, the lack of plans for future greening and the impact of the higher density built environment on the health and wellbeing of local residents.

This grant will provide access to a mix of technical and artistic expertise and horticultural materials that will support greening initiatives that can improve the wellbeing and quality of life for local people, raise awareness of the value of public green spaces and how the development of a local socially just greening strategy can make a significant contribution to addressing climate action. We aim to work directly with around 120 local people and then through public events to connect with the wider local community of around 500-600 people.
Winning the Movement for Good award of £10,000 has come at a perfect time as we move gradually out of this difficult period impacted by Covid-19. Following our collaboration on the research project ‘Mapping Green Dublin - Strategic pathways to community-led greening’ in 2020 with our partners UCD Geography and artist Seoidín O’Sullivan, we now have the resources to build on its recommendations that support and empower local people to create greener neighbourhoods through creative greening initiatives.
